On June 9, 2021, Norway's first PET recycling plant was opened by Minister of Finance Jan Tore Sanner. The plant is operated by Veolia.
Previously, deposit bottles collected in Norway were exported to Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands to be recycled there.
From now on, the new PET recycling plant for returnable bottles with a capacity of up to 25,000 tons per year will recycle over 80 percent of the country's total volume of returnable bottles, according to Veolia. For Veolia PET Deutschland GmbH, this is the fourth recycling plant to produce food-grade PET pellets, in addition to plants in Rostock, Frauenfeld (Switzerland) and Norrköping (Sweden).
